Physical Technical Glossary of POF Shrink Film

Thickness

Refers to the thickness of POF heat shrinkable film. Usually 10 microns, 11 microns, 12 microns, 12.5 microns, 13 microns, 15 microns, 17 microns, 19 microns, 23 microns, 25 microns, 30 microns, etc. Micron is the thickness measurement unit of the film, referred to as mic. This POF shrink film term is different in different markets, mainly based on local languages and measurement methods.

Width

The width of POF heat shrinkable film, determines the size of its packaged products. For the centerfold POF heat shrinkable film, one side of the roll film is sealed, you only need to open the opening side of the roll film to put the item in. And for the singlewound POF heat shrinkable film, you need to roll the item horizontally, when you decide what you are using. Please note this difference when checking film width.

Length

The length of a roll of film determines the number of items that can be packaged and the time that the packaging machine can run without stopping. Many people affirm that the longer the length of each roll, the better. It is true that the film roll can run on the packaging machine for a longer time, without wasting time or reducing packaging efficiency by changing the reel. But you also need to consider the size of the roll film that the packaging machine can accommodate. And whether It can conveniently and efficiently transport or handle roll film. There is not much room for film rolls on the packaging machine.

If each roll of film is too long, it cannot be loaded on the shrink packaging machine and you cannot use the film. If the length of each roll is too small, you need to replace the used rolls from time to time. And you need to setup the film reel on the machine, which is not a good solution. Transportation is also a big problem. Too large a film reel is more likely to cause damage to the film, because the greater weight causes greater stress during handling.

Smaller film length per roll will seriously increase your shipping costs. It’s because POF heat shrinkable film is wound on a paper tube, generally a 3-inch diameter paper tube, less length per roll means more per unit volume paper tubes. So is there a perfect solution? Mechanical Technical Glossary of POF Shrink Film

The currently recognized POF shrink film test follows some ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) testing standards. Through special test equipments and measurement units, commonly used standards such as D882, D2732, D1922, etc. These standard test scale-ups are used to compare the mechanical, physical, optical, and chemical properties of different POF packaging materials.

Shrinkage

Shrinkage
The mostly used one of POF shrink film terms. Shrink ratio or shrink rate is the degree of shrinkage of the film in percent when exposure to high temperature~been heated at the heating tunnel.

Slip

For POF shrink film, the sliding properties are divided into cold slip and hot slip. For cold slip, the higher the value, the less friction the film receives when it slides against other objects. The less resistance it receives, and the less resistance it receives on heat shrink machines. For hot slip, which occurs after the packaged collective boxes pass through the heating tunnel. The film with hot slip properties can prevent it from sticking, which can improve packaging efficiency and reduce film damage during packing.

COF

Coefficient of friction is the friction between the two layers of POF shrink film.

Puncture Resistance

Also known as the impact strength of POF shrink film. The higher the value, the greater the resistance to puncture caused by a sharp shaped object or a fall.

Tear Propagation

Allows us to assess the tendency of the material to tear further after it has been cut.

Tensile Strength

Informs us about the shrink packaging film’s susceptibility to tearing in directions of longitudinally and transversely.

Elongation

The stretching ability of the film, informs us to what extent the film will stretch before tearing.

Seal Strength

It’s a measure of the resistance of a joint to tearing after the film heat sealed by hot knife.

Shrink Tension

Also called as shrinking force, which is a measure informing us about the force exerted by the POF film during shrinking on the packaged product.

Flexibility

It’s about the film’s ability to work (sealing and shrinking) in unfavorable conditions, i.e. cold or lower temperatures.

Modulus

A measure of film stiffness. Higher modulus means higher the stiffness of film. Usually, a higher modulus means better performance on very fast packaging machines.
