Why Polyolefin Shrink Film Prices Are Different? Raw Materials

Introduction to Polyolefin Shrink Film Raw Materials

When you want to purchase polyolefin shrink film, you may notice that the films all look similar, but their prices can vary widely. Why is that? In this series of blog posts, we will explain the reasons behind these price differences, and in this first article, we’ll focus on the most important factor: the plastic raw materials used to make the film.

The Role of Raw Materials in Polyolefin Shrink Film Pricing

Polyolefin shrink film is primarily made from two types of plastic: polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). While both are integral to the film’s performance, their quality and grade directly impact both the functionality and price of the final product.

PE Raw Materials – A Major Component in Shrink Film

Polyethylene, or PE, is the primary material in polyolefin shrink film, accounting for the film’s flexibility, shrinkage properties, and clarity. Higher-grade polyethylene resins contribute to better performance and, of course, a higher price.

At our facility, we use ExxonMobil’s EXCEED resin, which is known for its superior film strength and excellent heat-sealing properties. This resin helps us achieve a high maximum shrinkage rate of up to 80%, which is ideal for packaging that needs to fit tightly around products. The clarity provided by this resin also enhances the visual appeal of the packaging.

Additionally, Dow Chemical’s 2045G grade of polyethylene is another material we use. This grade is known for its stable performance and cost advantages. It ensures consistent operation without the need for frequent adjustments to shrink packaging machines, offering excellent reliability at a more affordable price.

PP Raw Materials – Adding Strength and Sealing Power

Polypropylene, or PP, is another critical component of polyolefin shrink film. While it makes up a smaller portion of the film’s composition, its role is vital in enhancing the heat-sealing strength and overall durability of the film.

We use COSMOPLENE 6612, a high-performance PP resin, which ensures fast and effective heat sealing. This material is engineered to work well with any shrink packaging machine, offering heat sealing times as fast as 0.3 seconds. The resulting seal line is strong, durable, and resistant to breakage, ensuring your packages stay securely sealed.

PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) Raw Materials

These films are made using plastic waste collected from consumers. While using PCR materials can be more environmentally friendly, they come at a higher price due to the complex recycling processes involved. Moreover, films made from PCR materials may not perform as well as those made from virgin resin.

PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled) Raw Materials

PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled) polyolefin shrink film is made from plastic waste generated during the production process. These materials, while cheaper, have an impure composition that can impact the performance of the shrink film.

The Impact of Raw Material Grades on Film Performance and Price

The grade of raw materials used—whether virgin resin or recycled material—can have a significant impact on the price of polyolefin shrink film. Higher-quality resins, like ExxonMobil’s EXCEED or Dow’s 2045G, are more expensive but contribute to superior performance, durability, and appearance.

On the other hand, using lower-grade materials such as PIR or lower-grade polyethylene and polypropylene resins can cut down on costs but may compromise the film’s performance. This trade-off between cost and quality is one of the key factors driving the price differences in polyolefin shrink film.

The Importance of Stable Raw Materials in Shrink Film Production

The choice of high-quality polyethylene and polypropylene resins, as well as the use of specialty or recycled materials, directly impacts the film’s performance and price. Additionally, it’s crucial to choose a manufacturer that uses stable and fixed raw materials for production. This consistency ensures that every order of film will have the same performance characteristics, reducing the risk of quality issues such as inconsistent shrinkage or sealing strength. By working with a reliable manufacturer, you can be assured that your packaging will meet your standards every time, without surprises.
